Chapter 9 -> Building a New-Venture Team

Faculties : Dr. Aye Thandar Soe|;|4069
Commitment : 2 Hrs

About

This chapter focuses on the important task of building a new-venture team. The point that is emphasized is that a firm’s new-venture team doesn’t consist merely of its founders and its initial employees, but consists of its board of directors (if it is incorporated), its board of advisors, its lenders and investors (if applicable), and other professionals that the firm does business with.

The chapter is divided into two parts. The first part of the chapter begins by discussing the role of the founder or the founders of a firm, and emphasizes the weighty impact that founders have on the future potential of their firms. The section then talks about how the founders build a new-venture team, including the recruitment and selection of key employees, the construction of a skills profile to identify the most important skills that are needed and where skills gaps exist, and the selection of a board of directors. The second section of the chapter discusses the important role that advisers play in shaping and rounding out a new-venture team, specifically, the role of a board of advisors, lenders and investors, and others.
